Student Senate Community Bikes Program [Spring ‘09]
About the Calvin Community Bikes
Each year unclaimed bikes from the Calvin Bike rooms will be removed and painted maroon and yellow to make them distinguishable as well as labeled as a Calvin College Bicycle. They will then be placed in the bike racks for use by anyone.
The Rental System
Two community bikes will be placed in each dorm for the on-campus students and 3 bikes at the student senate office for the off campus students. The bikes will be rented out from the deskie. There will be a deposit system of student ID or a sign up sheet for renting out the bikes and a lock will be provided for parking the bikes.
The Rules
- Bikes can be used to go anywhere on campus and off campus.
- Bikes may not be removed from campus over night.
- Bikes must remain in a designated bike rack when not in use.
- All bikes are fair game for anyone to take.
- When the student fails to return the bike, there will be a sizable fine to pay for the replacement of the bike.
- When the student damage a bike the bike will be fix by the Bike Club, charging the student for any necessary cost in fixing the bike.
Safety
Safety is a very large issue when dealing with a program such as this. There are many things to consider when using the community bikes.
- It is important to always be aware of pedestrians on paths and to maintain a safe speed.
- Always use caution while driving on the roads. Always bike on the left side and use proper hand signals.
- Obey Traffic signals, signs and pavement markings.
- Bikes are ridden at bikers own risk. The bikes will be maintained as best as possible but it is important to keep in mind that they may be old, and anything can go wrong.
- Bikes are not equipped for night time use. Proper precautions should be taken if biking in the dark.
- Do not wear headphones while riding
- Helmets are strongly encouraged to be used at all times.
- Campus Safety will be given authority to charge any person riding a Calvin bike who breaks these rules.
Maintenance
Any problems or maintenance request should be sent to the Calvin Bike Club.
***This was adapted from the Hampshire College, North Central College, and Davidson College Bike policies.

Senate is Working Hard for YOU!
Senate has been very busy this fall! We are ahead of schedule on many tasks like our survey and we are diligently working on the following issues on campus:
Join Student Senate's Facebook Group and stay in the loop! Click here to Join the Group!
1. Smoking Policy [ongoing]
-Should smoking be banned on campus?
-Should Calvin transition to become a smoke-free campus?
-Are smokers' pits located in community-friendly places?
*Latest update: Senate has assigned the issue to a Senate committee. The committee is investigating campus attitudes and opinions concerning smoking and is expected quality data from the Student Senate Survey. Once all things are taken into account, the committee will submit a proposal to the full Student Senate and will take action accordingly.
2. DeVos Communication Center Open Sunday [completed!]
-Students were concerned that there were not enough venues for studying on Sunday
*Latest update: After discussions with key administrators, the decision was made to open the DeVos on Sundays from 1pm-6pm with extended hours during exams. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
3. New Mascot! [ongoing]
-After many years of the same, hot-dog-looking mascot named Cal Calvin, Senate has decided to get the job DONE and get a new mascot that we can be proud of in the new Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex.
*Latest Update: Senate has received preliminary designs and will tweak the designs based on student input from the Student Senate Survey. Senate is hoping to have a new mascot by the time of the dedication of the new facilities.
4. Parking Issues [ongoing]
-Would raising prices alleviate space and environmental concerns?
-Should designated parking areas have pricing differences?
*Latest Update: Senate is waiting on preliminary discussions and the survey before moving forward.
5. Dining Hall Hours [ongoing]
-Senate is looking into the possibility of having dining hall hours being made more flexible (one dining hall opening earlier and the other closing later) to accommodate those with varying schedules.
6. TV Channels [ongoing]
-Senate is investigating what TV channels students want and will make a proposal to Residence Life.
7. Gym Hours on Sunday [ongoing]
-Areas of the fieldhouse will open for Sunday use in January 2009
8. New Sand Volleyball Court [ongoing]
-Senate is looking into the possibility of a 2nd sand volleyball court near the dorms
9. Community Bike Program [beginning Spring '09]
-Bikes will be available for rental beginning in the Spring of 2009 at each dorm and in the Student Senate office for Off-Campus students
-Many thanks to the Calvin Bike Club for making this a reality
